Description
A creamy and comforting breakfast made by simmering toasted steel-cut oats with fresh apples until tender. Perfect for meal prepping or a cozy weekend morning.
Ingredients
Scale
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 4 cups water
- 3 medium apples, cored and chopped
- 1 cup steel-cut oats
- Maple syrup or honey (to taste)
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the steel-cut oats and toast, stirring frequently, for about 2 minutes until they smell nutty and fragrant.
- Add the chopped apples, water, and salt to the pot. Stir well and increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low to maintain a gentle simmer. Cook for 30 to 35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oats are creamy and the apples are tender.
- Remove the pot from the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes to thicken further. Stir in maple syrup or honey to taste before serving.
Notes
For a vegan version, use coconut oil or vegan butter for toasting. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
